On Wednesday, wildfires began spreading on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Israeli firefighters continue to battle the blazes, and the military has since been deployed to help evacuate nearby residents. The fires forced the closure of a key highway from Tel Aviv, prompting motorists to abandon their vehicles. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the situation a national emergency and said that firefighting aircraft from Italy and Croatia would be arriving to assist in the emergency response.
