- Here is a great way to fill your deep garden beds! Rather than spending a lot of money on expensive organic soil you can utilize the hugelkultur method. This method of gardening works by creating mounds of logs, sticks and decaying organic matter and then topping it with soil for the plants to grow. A good rule of thumb is to grow in at least 12-15 inches of soil. In this case half of the raised bed is filled with organic debris. This also elevates the garden, helping to shed excess water and the logs below act like water reservoirs absorbing excess moisture. Plus as the organic matter breaks down it helps to create even better soil.
