Residential schools: Canada’s legacy of cultural genocide

“The residential school system was the beginning of a path of wiping us off the planet”

For over 150 years, Canada and the Church abducted 150,000 Indigenous children from their families and sent them to residential schools to erase their culture. At Mohawk Institute — one of the oldest — over 100 children died.

Today, survivors are still fighting for the truth.

Laura Arndt, Survivor’s Secretariat Lead at Six Nations of the Grand River, says Canada is withholding 24.1 million records — and defunding the very organization trying to uncover what happened.

TRT World traveled to the Mohawk Institute and the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve in Ontario, Canada, to find out more about the legacy government-facilitated cultural genocide on First Nations peoples.
