Republican Congresswoman Maria Salazar from Florida is in hot water with conservatives. She went on Fox News to push her immigration bill. Many see it as amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. This has upset a lot of MAGA supporters who feel it goes against President Trump’s tough stance on the border.
In the interview, Salazar said it’s time for a “national conversation” about what to do with undocumented immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years. “I believe that after the border has been sealed… the moment now is to have that national conversation and determine who are we going to be targeting,” she said. She talked about Hispanics who have been here for more than five years, helped the economy, and have no criminal record. “For that reason, I’m introducing today… immigration reform.”
Salazar insists her bill is not amnesty. But critics don’t agree. Her Dignity Act, co-sponsored with Democrat Veronica Escobar from Texas, gives a path to legal status for illegal immigrants. They must meet rules like paying restitution and keeping a clean record. The bill includes a 10-year “Dignity Program.” Immigrants would pay money back and work in the U.S. It also adds $150 billion for border security, like more Border Patrol agents and tech.
