Arab states back call for Hamas to disarm | DW News

The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza prompted several western countries to announce this week that they would recognize a Palestinian state. Efforts to breathe new life into a two-state solution were also backed by the Arab League’s members this week. They unanimously endorsed a declaration calling for Hamas to lay down its weapons, release all hostages and end its rule of Gaza. The call for Hamas to disarm came at a United Nations conference on a two-state solution to end the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The meeting aimed to build political momentum towards formal recognition of Palestinian statehood. Israel and the US refused to attend, saying discussing a two-state solution now would only embolden Hamas.
