A Jewish-led demonstration against the United States’ complicity in Israel’s starvation of Gaza took place on August 1 at the New York office of US Senator Chuck Schumer, ending with the arrest of dozens of activists by officers of the New York Police Department.
Activists staged the protest in Schumer’s office to highlight the senator’s direct complicity, as he was among the minority of Senate Democrats who voted on July 30 to continue arming Israel.
Two resolutions seeking to prohibit the sale of certain munitions to Israel, both introduced by US Senator Bernie Sanders, were defeated on July 30 with the support of 19 Democrats. For the first time, however, a majority of Senate Democrats voted in favour of the measures, despite the unlikelihood of either resolution surviving a vote in the House of Representatives.
