Venezuela has rejected a decision by the US to officially designate the alleged drug cartel known as Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organization – describing the move as a ‘ridiculous lie.’
The US claims the group is comprised of high-ranking Venezuelan officials, including President Nicolas Maduro. The terrorist designation opens the door to new forms of pressure on Maduro and his government. Caracas denies the cartel exists existence of such a cartel. Authorities there have dismissed Washington’s claims as a "ridiculous lie" aimed at paving the way for military intervention.
