High unemployment pushes South Africans into illegal mining

South Africa ‘s official unemployment rate remains high at around 32 percent in the third quarter of 2025. With the lack of jobs in the country, many South Africans are working at abandoned coal mines illegally to make a living. But even that is under threat as the country transitions toward green energy.
