Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ended their Nara summit with an unexpected cultural moment, taking to the drums for a short K-pop jam session. The exchange recalled Takaichi’s university days as a heavy metal drummer, while Lee presented her with a Korean-made drum set and lacquered drums by a Korean artisan.
The moment followed discussions between two neighbours whose ties were normalised in 1965 through a $500m settlement and whose trade now totals about $75bn.
