As NATO increases its military presence across the High North, the Arctic is fast becoming a new frontline in global security.
On this episode, we travel to the Arctic capital, Tromso, to speak with EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas who calls Russia “the real threat” in the region, pointing to Moscow’s “military build-up of nuclear weapons, submarines” on the Kola Peninsula.
Although Kallas insists that the US is still a strong ally for Europe, she admitted that there is a “fracture” in the transatlantic relationship following Donald Trump’s recent threats over Greenland.
We also speak with Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braze who describes Russia as “the most prominent and persistent threat to Euro-Atlantic security”.
She insists NATO’s posture is about readiness, not provocation, adding that the European Union is “working on a new Arctic strategy”.
In a region once defined by low tension and cooperation, the Arctic has become a new arena for geopolitical tensions and great power rivalry.
