The history of emojis | BBC News

From a simple colon, dash and parenthesis : – ) to now, where we have over 3,000 icons that speak louder than words. A world without emojis may feel like ancient history, but in reality they’ve only been around since 1999.

By 2010, we had over 700 emojis. By 2015, Oxford dictionary named ‘face with tears of joy’ as its word of the year.

Now, anyone can submit an emoji idea to the Unicode Consortium.
