Markets shrug off Washington violence, focus on Senate election wins

The stock markets have shrugged off Wednesday’s storming of Capitol Hill by protesters, with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indices closing up on Wall Street. Asian shares also saw gains on Thursday, as investors cheered the Democratic election victories in the Senate elections in Georgia. Their hope is for a larger economic stimulus package, thanks to the Democrats controlling the Senate, House and White House. Business leaders, meanwhile, have condemned the events in Washington, calling for a peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Joe Biden.
