Several activists were arrested in Paris after displaying a giant Palestinian flag on the Eiffel Tower, the Extinction Rebellion group said, adding that the act of civil disobedience was intended to challenge France’s double standard.
“Usually, the French government chooses to light up the Eiffel Tower in tribute to victims of various conflicts around the world,” a protester told Reuters. “In reality, it took eight requests and a year and a half since the start of what we call the Palestinian genocide to pay such a tribute to Palestinian victims.”
Paris displayed a large Israeli flag in October 2023 but has never covered its historic monument with a Palestinian flag.
“For us today, it was important to draw attention to what is happening in Palestine and to compel everyone—passersby and tourists alike—to remember Palestine and to stop acting as if nothing is happening while a population is being killed,” the activist added.
“What we are trying to say today is that the Nakba was merely the starting point of a colonial process that continues to this day, involving ethnic cleansing and land expropriation,” she said.
