Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election with a record-breaking majority, securing 55% of the vote and more than 20 points ahead of his Reform opponent.
The prime minister has vowed to fight any leadership challenge, but sources close to Burnham say a contest would be "brutal" and "very unlikely" that Starmer could win.
