Sri Lanka elections: What you need to know | DW News

In Sri Lanka 16.2 million eligible voters will have a chance to elect a new parliament on Thursday. The vote which was delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic is seen as a test for Sri Lanka’s constitutional democracy. If the party of president Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins a two-thirds majority in the new parliament – it would allow it to bring changes to the constitution. Changes that would give greater powers to his office. And the front runner in the polls is the president’s own brother. Critics are warning that the Rajapaksas could transform the Sri Lanka into a autoritarian regime.
