Houthis launch attacks on Al-Jawf province

Saudi Arabia air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen’s Houthis on Tuesday, before it entered prohibited airspace over the holy city of Mecca, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said on Wednesday.

The attack came a day after a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen, which injured 13 people in the kingdom’s south.

About 500 have been reported killed in the recent exchange of fire, according to the World Health Organisation.

Save the Children said Tuesday that between Sept. 3 and 9 alone, 43 children were killed or wounded, the highest weekly casualty toll recorded by the relief agency in a year.

Nearly 94,000 people have fled their homes in Yemen since fighting between Houthis and the Yemeni international government escalated this month, the International Organisation for Migration said Monday.

Around 200 schools in southwestern Yemen have been converted into shelters to absorb an influx of families, the International Rescue Committee, an aid group, said.
