Chilean police fire tear gas at Indigenous rights protesters

Chilean police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse Indigenous rights protesters in Santiago on October 12, as demonstrators marked the Day of the "Encounter of Two Worlds."

The holiday commemorates Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas in 1492. But for many Indigenous communities, including the Mapuche, the date symbolises the beginning of centuries of colonisation, land dispossession and resistance.

Protesters marched through the capital demanding Indigenous autonomy, territorial rights and demilitarisation.
