Tens of thousands of students who have been awarded higher A Level grades after the UK government’s U-turn, have been rushing to sign up for university places. With many courses already full some students are still unsure about their academic futures. The government has said it will help universities to find places for them. Ministers were forced to abandon the exam regulator Ofqual’s computer modelling for A Level and GCSE results, after an outcry when 40% of were downgraded. Wales and Northern Ireland also reversed their policies. A debate is underway over who is responsible for the chaos, with both government ministers and the exam regulator Ofqual facing criticism. The Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson refused to answer questions about whether he would resign.
