As if converting Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia into a mosque hadn’t caused enough controversy, now there’s renewed anger over provocative footage showing Afghans unfurling a Taliban flag inside the iconic building. The Afghan government has called on Turkey to take action against what it called Taliban propaganda. Last month Turkey’s Council of State ruled that Hagia Sophia should be turned back into a Muslim place of worship, overturning a decree from 1934. The site had also previously housed a church. UNESCO and the EU have both called on Turkey to reverse its decision, but the Turkish government says it was acting under its sovereign right.
