The EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has warned that the Middle East is on the edge of ‘a regional war’, as concerns grow about escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. Iran carried out a retaliatory fusillade on Israel over the weekend, after a senior Iranian commander was killed in a bombing on its consular building in Damascus. Israel has vowed to strike Iran again despite diplomatic pressure to avoid doing so. Speaking at a meeting of G7 foreign ministers, Borrell said: ‘We cannot go step by step, answering every time higher to a regional war. I don’t want to exaggerate but we are on the edge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will be sending shockwaves to the rest of the world, and in particular to Europe’
