Israel has ordered a ban on Al Jazeera, suspending the Qatari news network’s broadcasts in the country and access to its website.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet made the decision after it deemed the news broadcaster a ‘national security’ threat, accusing it of being a mouthpiece for Hamas. Israel police raided the broadcaster’s office in Jerusalem on Sunday after the ban went into effect.
Al Jazeera condemned the move as a ‘dangerous decision’, vowing to take legal action. Walid Omary, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in the occupied West Bank, said: ‘It’s clear that they want to prevent anyone knowing what is happening in this war in Gaza, inside Israel and in the West Bank.’ Al Jazeera has previously accused Israel of systematically targeting its offices and staff
