A bomb, likely dropped by the US during World War II, exploded at Japan’s Miyazaki Airport on October 2, creating a large crater and causing the cancellation of all arrivals and departures.
Airport officials reported that the crater was seven metres in diameter and about one metre deep. The source of the explosion was identified as a 500lb (227 kg) US bomb from the Pacific War, during which many bombs were reportedly dropped on the runway of Miyazaki Airport, which was built on a former naval air base. Other unexploded ordnance was found and removed in 2009 and 2011.
