An airport and some major roads were closed after anti-regime rebels claimed to have reached the heart of the city, according to reports.
Opposition fighters, led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al Sham, carried out a surprise sweep through government-held towns this week.
The group is said to be in control of around half of Aleppo, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
