🇸🇾After more than 50 years of Assad family rule in #Syria, the regime collapsed with remarkable speed. Insurgents broke out from a rebel-held enclave in the north, swiftly capturing #Aleppo and several other cities in just days, before advancing toward #Damascus
💥Opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (#HTS), entered the capital on Sunday with little resistance, as the Syrian army crumbled. President Bashar al-#Assad, who had ruled Syria for 24 years, fled the country. His sudden downfall marks a dramatic turn in Syria’s brutal 14-year civil war, which began with Assad’s violent suppression of anti-government protests in 2011, during the Arab Spring.
🇷🇺Meanwhile, Assad sought refuge in #Russia. HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-#Jolani has urged all rebels to stay away from government institutions and has called for an orderly, peaceful transition of power.
