Cyclone Chido caused widespread devastation as it swept through the French overseas region of Mayotte on the night of December 14, with French officials stating that the death toll could number anywhere between hundreds to thousands.
Despite being a region of France, Mayotte is located in the Indian Ocean some 7,800km away from mainland France.
