Outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasised the strength of ties with Japan during a trip to Tokyo, just days after President Joe Biden blocked a multi-billion dollar takeover of US Steel by a Japanese company. Biden halted Nippon Steel’s bid citing security concerns, prompting Nippon to retaliate with a lawsuit.
The tensions risk damaging critical economic and diplomatic relations between the US and its biggest foreign investor. Blinken skirted the issue during his address in Tokyo, saying that Japan and the US have "a friendship that has grown stronger than its ever been."
