The Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon | Mapped Out

The Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon was established in 2000 by the UN to reduce direct confrontations between Israeli forces and the Lebanese militia, Hezbollah. But ever since it was implemented, skirmishes have continued. And after Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza on October 7th, 2023, things escalated in Israel’s northern boundary. Why has this non-border between Israel and Lebanon never become a step towards peace in the Middle East instead of just another battleground? Will a ceasefire bring hope for a more peaceful future? And has the fall of Syria’s long-term dictator, Bashar Assad, changed things on the ground?
