In recent weeks, the Trump administration has imposed unprecedented cuts to federal research funding, with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) among the primary targets. This move has sparked concerns among research institutions, which warn of potential job losses and the suspension of critical medical research projects.
In response, the "Stand Up for Science" movement has organised protests in more than 30 US cities, demanding "a restoration of federal scientific funding, the reinstatement of wrongfully terminated employees at federal agencies, an end to governmental censorship in science, and a renewed commitment to diversity in research".
In New York City, thousands gathered at Washington Square Park to stress the importance of continued scientific progress. Protesters voiced fears that these cuts could severely undermine public health and environmental protection efforts, raising deep concerns about the future of both American and global scientific research.
