The Vatican has announced the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. In a video statement, the Vatican said he passed away at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, next to Saint Peter’s Basicila. The Pope, recently hospitalized with double pneumonia, appeared in public just yesterday for Easter Sunday at Saint Peter’s Square. He performed a blessing from the same spot where he was introduced to the world as the 266th Pope in 2013. DW’s Bernd Rieger provides analysis.
