Since the end of World War Two, 80 years ago, the US has been the guarantor of European security and defense. US Presidents, Democrats and Republicans, have reaffirmed America’s commitment. Former President Obama’s foreign policy of "pivoting to Asia" seemed to put that commitment in question. But no President has threatened to close the American security umbrella over Europe like Donald Trump.
