Shireen Abu Akleh: Three years on, still no justice

Shireen Abu Akleh dedicated 25 years to Al Jazeera, becoming a significant voice for Palestine while fearlessly documenting the harsh realities of Israeli occupation in the West Bank.

The handling of justice in the wake of her killing by both Israel and the US highlights the ongoing impunity surrounding Israel’s targeting of journalists.

While initially blamed on crossfire, the Israeli military later acknowledged that one of its own soldiers likely killed Shireen. Despite this admission, no one has been held accountable. Israel blocked a US investigation into her killing, refusing to provide any details about the soldier responsible. And the Biden administration, although initially labelling the shooting as intentional, later reversed course, stating there was “no reason to believe” it was deliberate.

Now, a new documentary, ‘Who Killed Shireen?‘, produced by Zeteo, claims to have identified the Israeli soldier who fired the fatal shot.

As Israel’s war on Gaza continues, at least 232 journalists have been killed, making it the deadliest conflict for media workers ever recorded, according to the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs’ Costs of War project. Yet, not a single one of their killers has been brought to justice.
