Poland’s battle over abortion rights | DW News

Poland enforces some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. Emilia Niemiec, founder of the counseling group AboTak “Abortion Yes”, helps women navigate these difficult rules.

After the 2023 elections, Poland’s new liberal coalition, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, aimed to liberalize the country’s restrictive abortion laws. However, internal divisions within the coalition, particularly between the more liberal Left alliance and the conservative Polish People’s Party, hindered progress. Despite initial parliamentary support, a bill to decriminalize abortion assistance was narrowly rejected in July 2024, with 218 votes against and 215 in favor.
