In 2016, the Nigerian government launched a program to deradicalize Boko Haram insurgents and reintegrate them into society. Operation Safe Corridor was meant to reduce the membership of the jihadist group and – potentally – end the insurgency all together.
Now, after years of relative calm, there’s been a worrying upturn in violence in Nigeria’s Northeast. Estimates suggest more people were killed in the first half of this year than in all of last year. And a resurgence of Islamist attacks is contributing to the rising numbers.
DW’s Fanny Facsar and her team travelled to Borno State, where Boko Haram and an Islamic State splinter group are ramping up their attacks.
