On the world stage, US President Trump casts himself as a peacemaker – most recently by rolling out the red carpet for Russia’s President Putin. But at home, he’s showing ever more autocratic tendencies.
He’s moving to give the National Guard greater authority in Washington, D.C., and to station armed troops in other American cities. At the same time, he and his party are redrawing electoral districts to lock in power, while critics face mounting pressure or dismissal. How do these hardline domestic maneuvers square with his peace-focused diplomacy abroad? Is it a striking contradiction? On To the Point we ask: Peace abroad, troops at home: Is Trump flirting with dictatorship?
