US tariffs threaten India’s carpet industry | BBC News

Workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi – India’s carpet-weaving hub – say they are struggling to make a living after US President Donald Trump slapped 50% tariffs on Indian exports to the US.

The US accounts for nearly 60% of India’s $1.8bn carpet exports. Nearly three million people in Uttar Pradesh are directly or indirectly employed in the trade.

The carpet industry is among several sectors severely impacted by the tariffs, which came into effect in August.
