German police deployed water cannons and 6,000 officers in Giessen on November 29, using force to clear roads blocked by thousands protesting the far-right AfD youth wing congress.
Mobilised by unions and left-wing groups, demonstrators delayed the event by more than 90 minutes in a show of resistance against the rising extremist party.
