Greek farmers blocked a major highway linking Athens and Thessaloniki on December 1, driving their tractors onto the road to protest delayed compensation payments and rising production costs.
Clashes also broke out near Larissa on November 30, where police used tear gas to push back demonstrators, while farmers in Karditsa forced their way through police lines to reach the E65 highway.
Protesters say delays at Greece’s agricultural payments agency, now dissolved after a major subsidy fraud scandal, are leaving them unable to recover from recent losses.
In June, the EU fined Greece €392.2 million over widespread misuse of agricultural funds dating back to 2016.
