The Syrian government is pushing ahead with its unification drive across the country following earlier operations in Aleppo. The army has taken control of strategic resources, including oil fields, and towns such as Raqqa from the SDF, led by the YPG terror group. The two sides have agreed to a four-day ceasefire, with the terms of integration into the Syrian state to be concluded once the ceasefire expires.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump publicly commended Syrian president, Ahmed Alsharaa, for what he described as “tremendous progress” in stabilising the country. Washington has also said Damascus is its main partner in combatting Daesh.
And all eyes were on Greenland, and Davos, as the World Economic Forum got under way. Trump’s repeated comments about taking over the island have raised concerns across Europe over the future of NATO and the so-called “rules-based world order”.
