Kosovo’s deadlock is over, but the real battle begins

In this episode of Across The Balkans, we look at what comes next for Kosovo after it broke a year-long political stalemate, with Albin Kurti confirmed as prime minister, following a snap election in December. We speak to Donika Emini, CEO of CiviKos, to uncover whether Kosovo is strengthening governance or sacrificing democratic balance for centralised control. We also ask if a proposed one billion euro defence budget and a shift from reliance on NATO and KFOR raise new security questions.

Also, Serbia’s EU path faces fresh scrutiny as new justice laws spark concerns over media freedom and judicial independence. Brussels warns the reforms could mark a setback for the rule of law standards.

And Bulgaria’s president has decided on snap parliamentary elections for April 19, marking the eighth national election in just five years. It comes after former President Rumen Radev stepped down in January, and plans to run in the upcoming elections, where the race is set to test whether Bulgaria can break its political deadlock.

Across the Balkans, hosted by Nadja Muftic, is TRT World’s programme focusing on the issues and fault lines shaping Southeast Europe today.
