Skies over the Greek island of Crete turned a striking orange on April 1, blanketed by a thick haze of dust sweeping in from North Africa.
The phenomenon occurs when strong winds carry sand from the Sahara across the Mediterranean. The city of Heraklion was engulfed in the haze as a storm front brought rain and high winds, while severely low visibility forced several incoming flights to divert.
