Atef Najib, cousin of Syria’s ousted regime leader Bashar al Assad, appeared in a Damascus criminal court, becoming the first high-ranking regime official to face trial on home soil. As the former security chief of Daraa, Najib is accused of orchestrating the brutal 2011 crackdown, including the notorious arrest and torture of schoolchildren, that sparked the country’s civil war.
This landmark trial comes just days after security forces captured Amjad Youssef, the prime suspect in the Tadamon massacre, who confessed to executing civilians.
