Violent confrontations took place between police and some demonstrators in Geneva ahead of the G7 summit across the border in Evian, France. Youth groups voicing anger over capitalism, globalisation and inequality set bonfires and smashed windows of a bank as Swiss riot police responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The G7 summit starts on 15 June in Evian-les-Bains and will bring together the leaders of Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union.
