Activists dressed as Gandalf protest Peter Thiel’s oil investment

A group of protesters dressed as Gandalf from “The Lord of the Rings” gathered outside Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel’s residence in Buenos Aires on August 18 to oppose his investment in Argentine oil producer Vista Energy. The activists referenced Gandalf’s “You shall not pass” quote to protest Thiel’s acquisition of an approximately 1% stake in the company, giving him exposure to the Vaca Muerta shale formation. The investment, valued at around $76 million at the end of June, comes as Thiel strengthens his business ties with Argentina. Peter Thiel’s Palantir, which has been consistently under fire for its role in government surveillance and military applications, is named after the Palantirs from Lord of the Rings, which the dark lord Sauron used for spying and communicating with his allies.
