In a humorous speech, a man dressed as Darth Vader spoke about the use of controversial Flock cameras at a San Diego city meeting on public safety on Thursday.
In recent months, Flock Safety has reportedly installed 100,000 AI-powered cameras across the US, capable of reading the licence plates of millions of vehicles.
Police say Flock cameras help solve crimes, while opponents argue that the technology is being used by ICE to track migrants and puts the right to privacy at risk.
“Automatic license plate reader (ALPR) companies like Flock Safety are quietly trying to build a nationwide mass surveillance system,” says the American Civil Liberties Union.
“It doesn’t matter which company has its creepy cameras in your neighborhood; they all have the same problems: a lack of transparency, oversight, and regulation into how they collect, store, and use our data, and how to hold public and private actors accountable if they abuse it,” the non-profit argues.
