Hundreds of Tibetan exiles organised a protest in New Delhi on Thursday against China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law that they said will further erode the rights of Tibetans and other minorities.
Many Tibetans shaved their heads in a symbolic act of protest while chanting anti-China slogans.
Under the new ethnic unity law, acts deemed to incite division among China’s 56 ethnic groups are prohibited, and schools, families and other institutions are expected to foster patriotism, national unity and a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.
The Chinese government says its approach is to bring development to ethnic minority areas. Tibetan activists say the new law represents forced cultural assimilation and extended control over ethnic minorities.
Tens of thousands of Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama, live in northern India after fleeing Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against the Chinese government.
Beijing regards him as a political separatist and sees India’s sheltering of him, along with its facilitation of his activities, as a diplomatic irritant.
