A Jerusalem court on Wednesday absolved an Israeli man of criminal responsibility for attacking a 48-year-old French nun near Mount Zion in April, Israeli media reported.
Israeli public broadcaster KAN said the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court based its ruling on a psychiatric assessment of Yona Schreiber, the attacker. The assessment concluded that Schreiber was in a psychotic state when he carried out the attack and was unaware of his actions.
CCTV footage captured Schreiber following the nun before pushing her to the ground and repeatedly kicking her.
In April, Father Olivier Poquillon, director of Jerusalem’s French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, denounced the incident as a “gratuitous assault” in a statement on X. The statement was reposted by the French Consulate in Jerusalem, which said it “strongly condemned” the incident.
The Faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem expressed “profound shock and condemnation” over the attack and deplored what it described as its increasingly common nature.
“This is not an isolated incident, but part of a troubling pattern of rising hostility toward the Christian community and its symbols,” the faculty said.
