Israel has ordered the closure of the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem and barred UK officials from the Gaza co-ordination mission on September 8. The decision came in retaliation to UK-announced sanctions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described comments by his UK counterpart Ed Miliband as "outrageous lies" after Miliband accused Israeli settlers of ethnic cleansing.
The diplomatic rift sparked after Britain joined 12 countries, including France, Canada, Spain and Ireland, to announce sanctions and trade bans on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
