US President Donald Trump highlighted his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on September 29, when asked about Pyongyang’s nuclear arsenal. His remarks came after South Korean Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back said North Korea possessed an estimated 80 to 120 nuclear warheads, significantly more than Trump’s recent estimate of 57.
Trump has also signalled efforts to revive diplomatic engagement with Kim, including calling for a reduction in joint US-South Korean military drills, which he has described as “hostile” toward North Korea.
