Police crack down on protests against Colombia’s right-wing government

Police fired tear gas at demonstrators in Popayan as thousands marched across Colombia against the policies of newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella.

Former President Gustavo Petro joined labour unions, Indigenous groups and student activists at rallies targeting the US-backed administration.

Protesters warned that free public university education, minimum-wage increases and expanded labour protections are under threat from De la Espriella’s right-wing government.
