Turkish defense secretary flies over disputed waters in fighter jet

The Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has flown in a fighter jet over disputed waters in the Aegean Sea at a time of increased tensions with Greece. Akar boarded the F-16 as part of a four-fighter party that flew over the northern Aegean, where Turkey and Greece are embroiled in a war of words over maritime borders and gas drilling rights. The trip ostensibly celebrated the start of the Turkish Air Force’s pilot training program. It also flew over the Canakkale Martyrs’ Memorial, a statue that honours the 253,000 Turkish soldiers who fought at the Battle of Gallipoli in World War One. Whether the Greek government buys the Turkish line remains to be seen.
